O Taste and See

My parents have some close friends who live on a few acres of land. The Sabine River runs along the back of their property. These friends have eight children, three of whom match up to the ages of my siblings and me. My friend Stan and I spent many hours of our growing up years exploring the land along the Sabine River. We would hunt for arrowheads, whittle with our knives, and blaze new trails.

One fond memory that I have from going to their property is enjoying the honeysuckle bushes that were growing in the wild. They had a bright pink hue and a pleasantly sweet nectar. There were plenty of foods that I did not care for as a kid, but I wanted to feast on this deliciousness every time I visited. Enjoying this taste sensation wasn’t just a fleeting moment. Rather, I relished it with much anticipation. I wanted to EXPERIENCE it. In a similar way, the Lord wants us to bask in His goodness.

O taste and see that the Lord is good;
How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!

O fear the Lord, you His saints;
For to those who fear Him there is no want.

The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
And His ears are open to their cry.

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
And saves those who are crushed in spirit.

The Lord redeems the soul of His servants,
And none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.

Psalm 34:8-9, 15, 18, 22

When we taste and see that God is good, we EXPERIENCE His goodness. We don’t just pass Him by. We rest in Him and in His Word. We get to know and understand His character and attributes. We seek to truly know Him and not just know ABOUT Him.

How is He good? Psalm 34 speaks of Him giving us what we need. He provides us a place of safety within Himself. He hears our cries for help and is close to us when we are hurting. His grace and mercy are shown through salvation. Let us experience the goodness of God together. “O taste and see that the Lord is good.”

Love in Christ,

Adam
