King David knew a secret that many of us forget. He was stressed and feeling like a fence about to fall over after hurricane winds. So he talked to himself. David reminded himself of certain truths.
In the midst of enemies attempting to dethrone him, he reaffirmed to his entire being who God is. He affirmed his confident trust in God. Repeatedly, he used words like “He is my rock and my salvation.” “I wait in silence for God.”
Four times, David stressed his trust in God by adding the word alone. He was not going to rely on his underlings. God alone would be his deliverance.
Though his pulse likely quickened and his sense of justice was overwhelmed, David proclaimed that he would not be shaken. He knew that God was for him.
I find it amazing that David was willing to wait on God. He normally presents as someone who wants to take matters into his own hands. He tends to act impulsively on his own. I can identify with the desire to act now. Why wait around and get more anxious? I would do an end-around on fear and get ‘er done.
David took his time. He waited on God to act. He shared his wisdom. David invited others to share his confident trust in God. In fact, he called on people to express that trust of God in fervent prayer.
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us.
Psalm 62:8
That invitation has stirred my heart to pray in both happy and sad times. I have chosen to answer the invitation of God’s Word with prayer. Pour out your heart. God gives us permission to express every thought, struggle, pain, and hurt to Him.
Let your faith take refuge in God and express itself in fervent prayer. I encourage you, no matter your circumstances, to pour out your heart. Don’t hold back. Inventory what is on your heart and mind and give it to Him. Pour out your needs to Jesus like you would pour out a stale cup of coffee in the sink. Give them to Him completely.
Our God protects and provides. He acts for His glory and our good.
Oh, and that secret that David knew? We find it in the last two verses of the Psalm. David’s patience was motivated by the character of the living God. God is both strong and loving. I encourage you to read Psalm 62:11-12.
David meditated on God’s strength and love so much that he was not shaken in difficult times. I encourage you to linger long over God’s character. Even better, I encourage you to pour out your heart both for your own needs and the needs on this prayer sheet.
Love and blessings,
Dave
