The Suffering Servant

Do you know anyone whom you would consider to be a continual servant? These are the kind of people who are regularly meeting the needs of others and seldom looking for recognition. My Dad is one individual in my life who fits this description so well. There has not been a time in my life in which I have not known him to be serving in the church. From being a deacon, to singing in the choir, to teaching kindergarteners in Sunday School, he receives immense joy from serving. He pours into his family and into others by giving of himself and meeting their needs.

I believe we have many examples at CBC of individuals who consistently serve the Lord by serving others. I am thankful for the servants’ hearts that God has instilled in these people. They are tangible examples of being the hands and feet of Jesus.

It is without question that in Christ, we have the ultimate example of a servant. Any human expression of service is lacking in comparison to His sacrifice.

Isaiah 53 describes Jesus as the “suffering servant.” We see many instances of Jesus serving throughout His ministry and in His last days. He washed the feet of His disciples. He served as He shared the Last Supper with them. He even comforted His disciples amidst His own grief. Jesus promised to send His Holy Spirit as a comforter.

Jesus submitted to the Father’s will as He was arrested in the Garden. He then carried His own cross. His ultimate act of service was realized in His death for unworthy sinners. Although He is the King of Kings, He humbly bore the sins of humanity.

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Mark 10:45

He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.
When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
1 Peter 2:22-25

Jesus made the prophecies of Isaiah 53 come true. He is the promised Messiah who had been long awaited. “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases” (Matthew 8:17). Although His perfection knows no bounds, He humbly took on our sins. We could never earn the free gift of salvation that comes from our Heavenly Father. We owe our all to the suffering servant who bore our sins. May we strive to serve others as we follow Christ’s example.

Love in Christ,
Adam
