Look to Jesus – Day 13

Scripture for Today

Colossians 3:12 (NLT)

12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

God offers clothing that provides you a fresh ‘fit. His clothing is free, lasts for an eternity, and never goes out of style.  Best of all, you can put it on over your pajamas (you know who you are).

God exhorts us to wear clothing that draws people toward Jesus. God’s Word is clear, clothe yourselves. He calls out those who are His chosen people, redeemed by Jesus Christ.

God is asking us to be selective in what we choose from our wardrobe each day. He says, “Grab gear that will strengthen relationships even when you are social distancing.”

Jesus modeled this clothing when He was on earth. He was sensitive to the people around Him. He accepted, loved, challenged, and admonished depending on the need of the moment.

Let’s focus on the garment of humility. Follow Jesus’ lead in having a right view of yourself. Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. Recalling our condition before Christ (helpless, ungodly, rebellious) helps us have empathy for others. Understanding our identity in Christ (accepted, redeemed, loved) frees us to love others. Put on humility.

When you grab humility from your closet, don’t worry about whether it is still stylish. The Holy Spirit will give you the ability to wear it well. In fact, He will tailor humility to position your personality, behavior, and words to carry a positive impact. May you choose the right clothing to refresh all your conversations and make quite the fashion statement.

Changing clothes today,

Dave

Prayer for Today

Dear Jesus,

You are humble. You have changed our lives so that we can relax in You. You are powerful and mesmerizing and humble. You are gentle.

We confess that we are much too concerned with our needs. We admit that we are much too attentive to our desire for comfort. We acknowledge that we can be quite focused on ourselves in a way that prevents us from noticing others. We repent of pride, arrogance, and self-centeredness.

Thank You for calling us into Your kingdom. Thank You for revealing humility as the King of Kings when You gently spoke to the woman at the well. Thank You for allowing us to show grace in our relationships.

We ask You to help us think intentionally about our wardrobe each day. We seek Your strength in wearing humility well. We ask that You would overrule our selfish interests with the ability to speak into the needs of others. We need Your empowerment.

We love you. Thank You for loving us.

In the joyful name of Jesus,

Amen.

I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord
No tender voice like Thine, can peace afford

I need Thee, O I need Thee
Every hour I need Thee
O bless me now, my Savior
I come to Thee

I need Thee every hour, stay Thou near by
Temptations lose their power, when Thou art nigh

I need Thee every hour, in joy or pain
Come quickly and abide, or life is vain

I need Thee every hour, teach me Thy will
Thy promises so rich, in me fulfill

I need Thee every hour, most holy One
O make me Thine indeed, Thou blessed Son
