God’s Word Our GPS In Life

I have written before about my being “directionally challenged.” Without clear directions to my destination, I get lost easily. Especially in my teenage years when I first started driving, I needed specific directions to the place I wanted to go. I would pull up MapQuest on the computer and print out the steps.

Since I did not know where to go without the directions, I did not deviate from the prescribed course. If there was ever a detour in the road, it would often cause me to panic. At times, I would add inordinate time to my travel because I would be going the wrong way.

If I was driving in a place that was new or unfamiliar to me, I’d often call my dad and he would look at the map and help me figure out my way in the right direction. One of the best gifts I got as a young adult was a standalone GPS device. I was extremely grateful for these helps: the printed directions, the GPS device, and even my father who told me the way.

God’s Word is the guide by which we, as believers, live our lives. Thankfully, we are not left to wonder what direction God wants us to go. While every possible life scenario is not laid out for us, Scripture provides the principles by which we should live.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16 – 17

We can trust God’s Word as a reliable source. If the steps that I had printed consistently led me down the wrong path, I would have found a new source for directions. Because the Bible comes directly from God, we can follow the words of truth that are written in it. We can learn God’s directions for us as believers. God’s Word helps reveal sin and guides us in holiness.
