I love to tell the story;
’Tis pleasant to repeat
What seems each time I tell it,
More wonderfully sweet.
I love to tell the story;
For some have never heard
The message of salvation
From God’s own holy Word
I love to tell the story,
’Twill be my theme in glory
To tell the old, old story
of Jesus and His love.

I come from a rich heritage of story tellers. I recall spending countless hours listening to my grandparents on both sides of my family talking about their growing up years or telling my siblings and me about raising my parents, aunts, and uncles. My dad’s parents would tell me about doing farming and construction in west Texas. My mom’s parents would tell me about owning an auto parts store. There are some stories that I heard repeatedly. They became a part of my heritage.
Stories are effective at painting a picture. Whether it is a whimsical tale of fiction or a portrayal of true events, stories have a way of making one feel like he or she is right there in the middle of the event.
Before the entirety of scriptures was recorded, telling the stories of God’s faithfulness to one’s children and other loved ones was crucial in order for faith in God to continue in future generations. Jesus knew the effectiveness of stories. Through His parables, He would communicate great truths about the kingdom of heaven. The gospel is the greatest story ever told!
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
Psalm 107:1-2, 8
As believers, we each have a story to tell about our personal experience with Jesus and His salvation that we have received. We are able to share stories of His faithfulness. His provision during good and bad times. How He rescued us from sin and death. We can “tell of his works with songs of joy” (vs. 22).
Christ has commanded us to spread the gospel. Since we have been saved, we can use our stories to share the good news. As the hymn says, the gospel “’is pleasant to repeat.” As we experience God’s continual faithfulness, let us be faithful in sharing the “old, old story.”
