Like A Rock

Gwen and I just returned from a week in the mountains. Mountains have always been a go-to
place for me when it comes to de-stressing, relaxing, and being inspired. They bring me joy.
Mountains have come to portray strength to me. They represent a sense of stability. Despite
change in climates, hundreds of inches of snow, all kinds of trees, slides and avalanches, they are
largely unmoved. I am thankful that when God wants us to better understand Him, He compares
Himself to a mighty rock, a mountain!

The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are just.
A God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He.

Deuteronomy 32:4

That makes sense to me. A “rock” is mighty, stable, permanent, steadfast and immovable. I am
not. My emotions are not. They can change direction like a weathervane on top of a barn in a
thunderstorm.
Knowing what a “rock” is like helps me better understand our God. When I look at the rest of
that verse, I realize that He is steadfast and immovable in each of those attributes. And His
actions flow out of His attributes.
God is perfect in all His works. He is faithful. He is righteous and holy. Everything God does is
wise and loving. He is not capricious. He does not retaliate. He does not even have to count to
ten to cool down.
God simply acts and His works are perfect. He is faithful, keeping His promises.
Hiking in the mountains requires humility of me. Quite often, the air is thinner with less oxygen.
There is always an upward incline requiring more strength. The trails are uneven requiring
perseverance. I have to recognize my limits against this immovable force and move accordingly.
Navigating life situations requires humility before God. We must recognize that His character is
an immovable force against which we can entrust ourselves. Come before Him humbly.
I encourage you to meditate on this verse in your current life situation. How can you express
greater dependence upon God? Which characteristic helps you better understand Him and His
work in and through you? God is for you and He is immovable in addressing you with His
faithfulness. Immovable like a rock.
Love and blessings,
Dave
