Math has never been my strong suit. When I was in school growing up, I gravitated towards music and preferred English classes. My dad, on the other hand, double majored in math and psychology. He has an analytical way of thinking and was an engineer for all his adult working years. I am extremely grateful to him for helping me get through math in junior high and high school. We spent many nights working together on my math homework. I remember him making blocks that I could move and work with to help me understand geometry.

Math has predictability and rules. One plus one is two. Two times two is four, and so on. The phrase, “less is more” does not sync up with the rules of math. When you add something to something else, you get more! But, the phrase really means that the quality or effectiveness is higher when less is used. Less junk food equals a more healthy body. Less spending equals more saving. Less worry equals more peace. The apostle Paul described another instance in which less is more:
 

But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,

Philippians 3:7-8

It may seem that an increase in popularity and wealth are beneficial. However, nothing on earth is eternal. When it comes to following Christ, less earthly glory and possessions is truly more in God’s kingdom. Our eternal life in Jesus is worth more than anything the world has to offer. Through faith in Christ, God gives us righteousness that we could not earn. Any good that we feel we can claim is not our own. Less is more!
