An active prayer life keeps us from being practical deists.
An active prayer life is a deeply-held belief that the living God of the universe is involved in our daily affairs. Not only that He is involved, but that He cares about us.
God’s Word reveals to us that God is both transcendent and immanent.
God is transcendent which means that He is far above creation. We know God has made us and rules over us. He is totally “Other” than creation, greater than all of it and distinct from it.
When we are in need of guidance, security, and healing, we need to know that we have a Rock and a Redeemer who transcends the mess of this world and can make things right. That Someone is our living God.
With Paul, we wonder at God’s greatness (Romans 11:33),
Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!
Our faith is strengthened by His transcendence.
God is also immanent which means that God is very much involved with us, for we are continually dependent upon Him for our existence and our functioning.
Like a child at bedtime needs to know her mother is in the next room, we need to know that there is a God who cares for us and moves toward us in our need. That Someone is our living God.
With Peter, we respond to God’s goodness (1 Peter 5:6),
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
Our faith is strengthened by His immanence.
Deism generally believes that God created everything and then left it alone to run helplessly. We know better.
Let’s practice active prayer lives, that we might experience the life-giving reality of Jesus Christ. May your faith be strengthened as you look to Him in all His greatness and goodness.
Love and blessings,
Dave
