God designed certain animals to be fascinating architects. Beavers, for instance, use their uniquely designed teeth to chop down trees, which they use to build their dams. These materials act as obstacles to barricade water. With smaller supplies such as sticks and branches, they seal their structures, preventing water from entering.
Bees build intricate honeycombs for storing their honey. Chimpanzees rebuild their nests each day in order to keep out pests and to ensure a good night’s sleep. Some termite mounds can reach 25 feet high! God created each of these creatures with the ability to design structures that meet their specific needs.
In our Bible Immersion Adventure, we recently read about Solomon and the building of his palace and the temple. In building those structures, Solomon exhibited his architectural prowess and wisdom. The temple had three main sections and was made from materials such as bronze, cedar, and juniper wood.
Solomon made a profound statement about God as he reflected upon the temple: “Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You; how much less this house which I have built (2 Chronicles 6:18).”
Solomon knew that God could not be confined to a certain space. The grandeur of the temple could not compare to God’s glory, which filled the house of the Lord. Yet, this was a special place in which God’s people could meet with Him. Solomon knew that this would be a place where God would hear and answer the cries of His people.
Listen to the supplications of Your servant and of
Your people Israel when they pray toward this place;
hear from Your dwelling place, from heaven; hear and forgive.
2 Chronicles 6:21
Believers are now God’s temple. We have the immense honor and privilege to be able to meet with God wherever we are. We do not have to visit any particular place with ornate architecture. While Jesus is our ultimate sacrifice, we are to be living sacrifices, offering ourselves to Christ daily.
Every moment is an opportunity to pray. Just as God heard the prayers of His people that came from the temple, so does He hear the honest, humble prayers of us today. May we be awed by His glory as we come into His presence.
Love in Christ,
Adam
