We are now nearly two months into our Bible Immersion Adventure. I have personally found it to be a blessing to go to God’s Word daily while following this plan. It has also been encouraging to have a small group of people with whom to discuss our regular readings. Whether it be a spouse, coworker, friend, or other family member, I would encourage you to find a few people with whom you can discuss what God is showing you through His Word. Our recent reading in Psalm 36 speaks of wickedness versus righteousness. The psalmist also poetically describes the love of God and what it looks like to follow Him closely.
Verses one through four of Psalm 36 reveal that there is wisdom in fearing God. The wicked “flatter themselves too much to detect or hate their sin.“ We must guard our hearts from thinking too highly of ourselves. This is certainly a dangerous pitfall as self-elevating blocks the awareness of one’s own sin, much less the ability to see sin in the way that God does. Sin breaks God’s heart. He desires that we reject sin.
The wicked lead people astray with their words. May our words build one another up, speak truth from God’s Word, and show love, patience, and goodness. The wicked do not show wisdom in their actions. They “commit themselves to a sinful course and do not reject what is wrong.” This is a conscious choice to embrace sin. The ways of God are in complete contrast to our ways. He has no wickedness in Him.
Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
your justice like the great deep.
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
Psalm 36:5-7
The love of God knows no limits. His holiness, likewise, is boundless. There is no way to measure the significance of His love. He is the meaning of life itself. Life flows directly from Him. “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light” (vs. 9).
The Lord shows goodness and mercy to those who follow Him. Because we have known and experienced the love of God in our own lives, we can extend love to others. We can choose to reject wickedness and embrace God’s righteousness. May you be encouraged today by the truths of this passage.
Love in Christ,
Adam
