A cold front has arrived this week. We are now experiencing cooler mornings and
evenings. Before long, people will be cozied up by their fireplaces, seeking
respite from the winter air. We will sip hot chocolate both in recognition of the
season and in an attempt to warm up.
Many people change their attire in the cooler months. We no longer wear the
shorts and flip flops we donned during the summer. We layer on flannels and
boots. We bundle up in jackets and hats. This wardrobe switch is a conscious
act. In a similar way in which we make the concerted effort to change our
apparel, we are called to have our attitudes transformed by Christ.
So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience
Colossians 3:12
God sees and knows our hearts (1 Samuel 16:7). He is able to help change our
hearts to reflect His character. The book of Colossians also indicates a conscious
effort being made on our part. While Christ can transform our character, we must
choose to show Christlikeness towards others, much like the choice to put on
certain clothes at the beginning of the day.
bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint
against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all
these things put on love,
which is the perfect bond of unity.
Colossians 3:13-14
Forgiveness is another choice we must make. We have received an
insurmountable measure of forgiveness from Christ. We should clothe ourselves
with forgiveness. Showing the love of Christ is a conscious decision. We have
countless opportunities to show the love of Christ each day. May we choose to
clothe ourselves with Christ’s character.
