Turn My Heart Toward Your Statutes

We tend to exaggerate when we really want something or when we are trying to express extreme feelings. “I love you to the moon and back.” “I’m bored out of my mind.” “I’m starving!” “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!”

What do you long for? Some of our desires are trivial and surface level. Other things for which we yearn feel like they are our lifeblood. Sometimes we selfishly seek something for our own benefit. Other times, we have wishes on behalf of our family or loved ones. Truly, our deepest longings are fulfilled in God and His word.

Turn my heart toward your statutes
    and not toward selfish gain.
Turn my eyes away from worthless things;
    preserve my life according to your word.
Fulfill your promise to your servant,
How I long for your precepts!
    In your righteousness preserve my life.
You are my portion, Lord;
    I have promised to obey your words.
I have sought your face with all my heart;
    be gracious to me according to your promise.
I will hasten and not delay
    to obey your commands.
Psalm 119:36-38, 58

We are incredibly prone towards selfishness. We like to make our own choices. We like to do things on our own terms and timetables. Quite often, our longings do not properly represent God and His kingdom. May we turn our hearts away from selfishness. Christ has offered us the ultimate example of denying oneself.

The things of this world are meaningless. They do not add eternal value to our lives. God and His Word are our lifeblood. God is our portion. He is more than enough. The things of the world pale in comparison to God’s worth. May we seek after Him with all our hearts. Oh, that we would long for righteous and to know God more closely.

Love in Christ,
Adam
