I’m a kid at heart. And just like a young kid full of excitement, I want to put a smile on your face and fresh resolve in your heart.
Seeing fresh snow on the ground Tuesday morning brought me delight! I threw on my jacket, grabbed my phone, and went for a brief walk in our neighborhood.
I waved to a Dad and two children who discovered what would amount to a drift of snow against a curb. They were giggling as they made snowballs to throw in the creek.
I found the cool air invigorating as I snapped pictures of our home to send to relatives. I recorded our cat trying to discern the nature of this white stuff on the ground as she made the slow decision to step in it. I headed inside the house to send my pics. I planned to return to the snowy bliss to make my snowman. Every kid-at-heart makes a snowman, right?
Then I got delayed with other interests. By the time I returned to my front yard, the snow was beginning to melt. I was concerned that I might not be able to form a snowman that would stand firm.
Working on my snowman with melting snow brought to mind our Bible Immersion Adventure. Was everyone able to continue their daily Bible reading with the excitement they had at the start?
Or was that enthusiasm to open our Bibles beginning to melt away?
We are 22 days into our Bible Reading which, according to research, is about one-third the time it takes to form a good habit. It is so easy to have a fresh resolve for a good habit at the start of a new year. Like a tire slowly losing air, many resolutions recede from our daily life. They ebb away because they have not been fully incorporated into our routine yet.
I write to encourage you today. If you are still reading your Bible, read on with joy! If you are beginning to wane in your reading, let Paul’s words motivate you.
Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness;
for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things,
since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
1 Timothy 4:7b-8
Paul stresses the need to seek spiritual strength as it is more profitable than physical strength both now and for eternity. If you have lost all resolve to open your Bible, I encourage you to start again today! Feel no shame. Simply resolve anew to open your Bible and start on the current date in your plan.
Melting snow did not prevent making my snowman. The snow actually packed tighter. This fun project even stood tall through the afternoon sunshine.
