I was all set to write a devotional about entropy and Ecclesiastes (which I will save for another time) when God gave me a glimpse of a rare beauty yesterday. Driving home from a restaurant, Frances and I saw a full double rainbow, stretching from one horizon to the other. It was gorgeous and wonderful and an incredibly unique blessing. Most times when I’ve seen a rainbow, there are trees or buildings or mountains in the way, but this time it was all there, with a second rainbow as well!
That rare blessing made me stop and thank God for His beautiful creation; for all the many ways He has made our reality beautiful. He didn’t have to make our world so colorful or give us the eyes to see it. He didn’t need to place the stars in the sky so that we could see them or dress the flowers of the field in such wonderful array. He certainly wasn’t forced to craft a world where every sunset is unique and beautiful in its own way.
Indeed, God chose to give us a beautiful world. He is the ultimate Creator, and He created a beautiful, wonderful existence for us to experience and to marvel at. As the Bible says, God considered His creation “Good” (Genesis 1). And how good it is!
And, more than that, God gives each and every one of us a unique experience of His creation. Each of us lives a life that God set before us in a body that He designed specifically for us. Through that life and that body, we see and experience His creation in a unique way. How incredible, that God made us special, unique, and specific. King David, in Psalm 139, wrote:
You knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
My soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from you,
When I was being made in secret,
Intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
In your book were written, every one of them,
The days that were formed for me,
When as yet there was none of them.
Psalm 139:13-16
Those rainbows yesterday reminded me that God made a beautiful creation and that He made the entirety of creation and even my very life specifically and uniquely. No one else in all creation saw that rainbow exactly the same as I did. No one will ever see the same exact sunset as me, or hear a bird song exactly the same, or know His love in exactly the same way.
God has made us unique and has given each and every one of us a special and one-of-a-kind life where we can experience His good and beautiful creation in a way only we can. What an incredible gift; something that God did not have to do. He did it because He is creative, and beautiful, and He loves us so very well. Hallelujah!
Today, as we pause to pray for our church family, for our needs, and for those we love, thank God for the beauty in your life. Thank Him that He made you specifically and specially. Thank Him that He has given you a unique life to live full of experiences and moments only for you. I hope you cherish that blessing, that God knows and loves you completely.
God’s Comfort and Strength be with you all,
Noah
